My name is Don Kaufman. When I moved to Port Orange I retired, after many years in the men’s clothing business. I took up Intarsia as a hobby to keep busy, but gradually switched to fretwork. All my work is hand done on a scroll saw. I found this very gratifying, making things for my children and friends. My first large project was a motorized ferris wheel with a ticket booth and music box, which took nearly one month to complete. This has been the big attraction at my craft shows, drawing kids and adults alike. Since then I have included a German Chalet with a clock, a mill with moving water wheel and a clock, a magnificent Boussum clock, a 1920’s fire wagon, a chiming Grandfather clock, an Anniversary clock, a very intricate Sirens and Chimeras with a large clock, a three layer Kayla clock, the Eiffel Tower and other smaller pieces. My latest endeavors have brought me to working with Corian. I make portraits of famous people from the movies, comedians and singers, Nascar drivers, religious figures and crosses, motorcycles and emblems, military emblems, and a variety of abstract pieces with clock inserts. I do very well with trivets that I personalize for a variety of occasions. I am able to convert photos into patterns in order to make portraits in Corian. These have been very successful for me, and I have made them of many of my family members for them to display in their homes. Obviously, they are very unique pieces which cannot be found elsewhere.
I travel exclusively in the state of Florida, and have won prizes at Orlando’s Lake Eola, Longwood four times, Woodstock in Sunrise three times, New Smyrna Beach Art Fiesta, and Best In Show at Art in the Pines in Pembroke Pines. I have been accepted to fine craft shows, including Estero, San Marco in Jacksonville, Mt. Dora, Mandarin Art Fest, Maitland Rotary Art Fest, Lake Mary, Jensen Beach, Downtown Festival in Gainesville, The Deland Fall Festival and the Space Coast Art Festival.
