October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know that, according to the American Cancer Society, about 12% of women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime? That’s approximately 1 in 8 women! Did you also know that, even though the number of breast cancer deaths has been on the decline since 1989, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, right behind lung cancer?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

For many of us, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time when we are reminded of these statistics and many other facts; But for those whose lives are touched by breast cancer every day – from those who are battling cancer to those who love someone who’s battling – these statistics hit a little bit too close to home.

Every year, thousands of people in the U.S. are given a breast cancer diagnosis. Every year, thousands of those diagnosed die of breast cancer. That is why every year, organizations such as the American Cancer Society, The National Breast Cancer Foundation, CancerCare and Susan G. Komen for the Cure and many other local, regional, national and global entities all over the world come together every October to raise awareness about breast cancer screening and diagnosis.

Especially early diagnosis. Because early diagnosis is crucial; it produces a 98% survival rate among those diagnosed. For information about early detection, self breast exams and other resources, visit the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer resource page, or visit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure early detection section.
