Shambala-Hike_CO Brenda McMahon forms soft earth into subtle polished vessels in the quiet of her St. Petersburg, FL studio.

Her mystical and magical surface is achieved by skillfully throwing porcelain pots on the potter’s wheel to create elegant forms. Once dry, Brenda carefully polishes each vessel with a river stone. That labor intensive burnishing process aligns the porcelain particles to create a satin finish.

Each hand formed vessel is nestled in another firing chamber and surrounded with a variety of organic materials. The grasses, Spanish moss and palm fronds are used to affect the surface design while other materials and minerals provide the soft colors. The burning organic materials in the saggar kiln yield a splendid combination of smoky blacks and grays with a palette of orange, salmon, pink and burgundy – all without the use of glazes. Once complete, Brenda polishes the vessels with beeswax and applies her bamboo handles.

Brenda was schooled at Manhattan’s Hunter College and received her master of arts at SUNY Albany. She exhibits and teaches nationally and internationally. Most recently Brenda has presented her work in Italy and Thailand.
